Cowtribe, Ghana’s leading full-stack animal vaccine distribution platform, has been selected for the Scaling Digital Agriculture Innovations through Start-ups (SAIS) Accelerator Programme.
Implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the SAIS Investment Readiness Programme provides tailored support to tech start-ups from the agriculture, food, and livestock sectors to position them to raise capital for growth. Over the year-long program, the selected startups will receive personalized coaching from experts and investors to develop and implement growth strategies. Companies will also receive training in key startup development themes.
Established in 2017, Cowtribe is addressing the problem of limited access to vaccines and medication for smallholder farmers in remote areas of Africa. The company partners with manufacturers, distributors, and logistics providers to create a seamless process of delivering animal vaccines to retailers and smallholder farmers at the very last mile of Africa. Last year, the startup partnered with Zipline, the aerial logistics company, to assist Ghana’s Veterinary Service Department in distributing anthrax vaccines in the Upper East region during the anthrax outbreak.
The company also introduced a buy-now-pay-later product to support agro-veterinary suppliers. Agro-veterinary suppliers in eight regions can now acquire animal health supplies and pay later. In 2023, the company issued a total of 219 credit invoices valued at GHS 1,037,488 with a 97% repayment rate.
Founded by Peter Awin and Alima Bawah, the company claims to have delivered 35 million vaccine doses and impacted the lives of 15,000 smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and plans to deliver 100 million doses of vaccines and impact 50,000 smallholder farmers in Africa by 2025.
