Ato Kwamena Mensah is a technology enthusiast passionate about solving Africa’s food challenges. He is the Co-founder and CEO of LbH, an agricultural technology startup that connects over 12,000 smallholder farmers to financing, data-driven agronomy services, and premium markets.
- How would you describe your job to a 5-year-old?
I’m like a firefighter at my job. I use my water pump daily to put out all kinds of fires and help people.
- What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since launching your startup or getting into the role?
It’s all about partnerships. I thought I could do everything independently, but I quickly realised how important it is to work with others. Customers don’t care who you teamed up with; they just appreciate that you solved their problem.
- What’s one function or area of your job you spend the most time on?
I spend most of my time on teamwork, such as performance reviews, setting KPIs, hiring and firing, and team meetings.
- What are three trends in your sector you are bullish about or keeping a close tab?
Carbon credits, alternative livelihoods for rural farmers, and embedded insurance.
- What gaps do you think startups in Ghana should be building for?
We need more bright minds building what they’re passionate about. This is what made Silicon Valley great—geeks having fun. Unfortunately, we’re losing a lot of talent to the “japa” culture (seeking opportunities abroad).
- If you were to build a new company, which historical or contemporary figure would you appoint to the board and why?
Alexander the Great will be my best bet. Our board meetings would be about conquering the world, and I love that idea!
