Nicholas Carl Clerk is an Investment Ecosystem Development Manager at Renew Capital, supporting the establishment of Renew Capital’s presence in Ghana through the engagement of investment and development ecosystem actors and the management and execution of private sector consulting and development projects. Nicholas supports the facilitation of gender-smart programs and assists in all aspects of investment pipeline development, due diligence, and deal selection.

  1. How would you describe your job to a 5-year-old?

I help find cool ideas and support people who want to build amazing things. It’s like planting seeds and watching them grow into something incredible. My job is to bring my company’s vision to life in Ghana, ensuring that everything we do turns out great and leaves a lasting legacy for the future.

  1. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since launching your startup or getting into the role?

The most surprising thing I’ve learned working for an investment firm is Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem’s rapid growth and potential. The level of innovation and the quality of startups emerging in various sectors have been truly impressive.

Engaging with founders from across the country and the West African landscape is always exciting. Their passion and innovation are truly inspiring.

Reflecting on current developments, I’m intrigued by the evolution of the continent’s digital transformation, the growing role of female entrepreneurship, and innovation across various key sectors, navigating through an ever-evolving regulatory landscape.

  1. What gaps do you think startups in Ghana should be building for?

Ghana’s startups can innovate in sectors that enhance community well-being and economic resilience. Leveraging technology within the private sector presents significant opportunities for fostering inclusive growth and development.

  1. If you were to build a new company, which historical or contemporary figure would you appoint to the board and why?

Warren Buffet. His exceptional business acumen, long-term vision, and unconventional strategies have consistently led to success in diverse industries. He will bring invaluable guidance and stability to any company’s growth and strategic decisions.
