Kofa Technologies, the pioneering Ghanaian company re-engineering energy access through clean, portable battery solutions, has partnered with PASH Global, a leading impact investor, to significantly expand Kofa’s battery swapping network across Ghana.
The ambitious expansion project is supported by a £2.35 million investment from Shell Foundation, co-funded by the UK Government’s Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform. An additional £1.4 million from Shell Foundation and TEA will be used to boost Kofa’s e-bike asset financing, conduct research on the impact of its multi-use battery technology, and cover operational expenses.
Expanding Clean Energy Access
The project, spearheaded by Kofa and PASH, aims to provide reliable, affordable, and clean energy for electric two-wheelers, while simultaneously powering small businesses and homes that currently rely on petrol generators. This initiative will not only reduce dependency on fossil fuels but also promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Ghana.
Kofa’s primary focus will be on managing its core business of battery network operations. This includes the infrastructure to ensure users can access fully charged batteries at all times. PASH Global will complement Kofa’s efforts by overseeing the operational maintenance, deployment, and management of the battery swapping station.
Scale and Impact
The network is set to deploy 6,000 batteries and establish up to 100 swap stations across Ghana, ensuring that clean energy is accessible whenever and wherever it’s needed. This initiative is designed to facilitate the transition to clean energy, offering an efficient, climate-resilient model tailored for urban environments. By aggregating operators and introducing interoperability between systems, the project aims to lower costs and improve service reliability.
In line with sustainability goals, PASH plans to transform these battery swap stations to run fully on solar power, further amplifying the environmental benefits and reducing carbon emissions.
“This initiative is a significant step toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in Ghana. With the support of our partners, we are building a foundation that will not only benefit local communities and businesses but also serve as a model for clean energy innovation across Africa,” said Erik Nygard, CEO of Kofa Technologies.
