The Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO) has secured £1 million for winning the 2024 Earthshot Prize for pioneering efforts in promoting clean air and sustainable waste management across Africa.
Founded in 2014 by Joshua Amponsem and Desmond Alugnoa, GAYO is solving the escalating waste and pollution issues in Africa’s rapidly urbanizing cities. Through its zero waste model which combines community involvement, education, and innovative recycling techniques, it tackle waste-related pollution, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and fosters economic opportunities.
The organization educates communities on proper waste disposal and recycling, creates public awareness around environmental impact and health risks tied to traditional waste handling. It trains community members in waste management best practices and helps them earn a livelihood by selling eco-friendly products, like compost and charcoal briquettes, made from recycled waste.
To date, GAYO has created over 70 green jobs, positively impacting more than 5,000 people through employment and awareness initiatives. In 2023, GAYO kept 170 tonnes of waste out of landfills — 104 tonnes of organic waste and 66 tonnes of plastic.
With the support of the Earthshot Prize, GAYO has ambitious plans to scale its zero waste model across Africa. By 2030, it aims to expand to half of Africa’s cities, reaching countries like Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Ghana by up to 70% through more efficient waste management.
