Kodu Technology, a startup addressing key challenges in rural communities—period poverty and agricultural waste—has secured one of the grand prizes, $50,000, in the 2024 GoGettaz Agripreneur Prize Competition.

This year’s competition attracted nearly 2,000 applications from across Africa, with 12 finalists competing for the top prizes after a rigorous evaluation process, including semi-final online interviews. Since its launch in 2019, GoGettaz has been instrumental in recognizing and supporting entrepreneurs driving sustainable change through innovative agricultural ventures across the agrifood value chain.

Founded in 2022, Kodu Technology specializes in producing biodegradable sanitary pads made from banana and plantain fibers. These eco-friendly pads are affordable, accessible, and tailored to meet the specific needs of women in underserved communities. What sets them apart is their use of 100% natural materials, including organic glue derived from banana peels, ensuring both sustainability and environmental friendliness.

Kodu Technology is deeply integrated into the local agricultural ecosystem by sourcing banana and plantain fibers from local farmers, creating a new revenue stream while reducing agricultural waste. The company also empowers women by providing training on fiber preparation and production, enabling community members to participate in the manufacturing process.

To further its mission, Kodu Technology has built partnerships with NGOs, healthcare providers, and educational institutions to distribute its sanitary pads more widely. These collaborations aim to ensure that women, even in the most remote areas, have access to affordable and safe menstrual health solutions.
